WANDERLUST: LISBON AND ESTORIL

After Ireland and Scotland, Portugal was the third new country I visited this year. My time there was also my very first beachy vacation after going to Asia in 2013, which are two of the main reasons why I was so excited to go. We spent three glorious days in Lisbon before we headed over to Estoril, which is just about 30 minutes away from Lisbon by train for another four beautiful days at the beach. This was honestly one of my favourite vacations ever, it was so relaxed, Lisbon was such an incredible beautiful town to just stroll around in and I have missed the sea dearly.
Nach Irland und Schottland, ist Portugal dieses Jahr das dritte neue Land, das ich kennen lernen durfte und mein Urlaub hier war nach meiner Reise nach Asien 2013 der erste Strandurlaub. Allein wegen dieser zwei Gründe habe ich mich wahnsinnig auf unseren Urlaub in Lissabon gefreut und die Zeit dort hat alle meine Erwartungen noch übertroffen und unsere Woche dort ist einer meiner Lieblingsreisen gewesen. Wir hatten drei wundervolle Tage direkt in Lissabon, bevor wir vier Tage lang in dem nur 30 Zugminuten von Lissabon liegenden Strandort Estoril die Sonne genossen haben.
Getting there and around
Ryanair and other cheap airlines fly to Lisbon directly. We only spent 90 Euros back and forth and got amazing flights from Saturday to Saturday. Within Lisbon you can buy a ticket for 50 cents, which you can reuse multiple times both on the Metro and the trains. You basically charge it and check in and out just like with the Oyster Card in London. A oneway trip on the Metro costs 1,40 Euro no matter how long you are going on it. If you are up for a beach day, the trains to the coast leave about every 20 minutes from Cais do Sodre and cost 2,15 Euros one way. The biggest beach is right at Estoril station, but I also heard Cascais is gorgeous.
Ryanair und ander Billig-Airlines fliegen Lissabon direkt an. Wir haben nur 90 Euro für unsere Flüge bezahlt und hatten perfekt getimete Flüge von Samstag bis Samstag. Innerhalb von Lissabon gibt es ein wiederaufladbares Ticket, dass ihr an jedem U-Bahn Automaten für 50 Cent bekommt und dass sowohl in der Metro als auch für Züge gültig ist. Eine Fahr mit der Metro kostet 1,40 Euro, ganz egal wie weit ihr fahrt. Wer an den Strand möchte, nimmt einen der alle 20 Minuten fahrenden Züge von der Station Cais do Sodre und zahlt für die 30 bis 40 minütige Fahrt lächerliche 2,15 Euro. Der größte Strand ist direkt an der Station Estoril, aber auch der Küstenort Cascais (2 Stationen weiter) soll wunderschön sein.
Accommodation
While we were in Lisbon we stayed at the Inn Possible hostel in the centre of Lisbon. It is right at the Metro Station Rossio, close to the River and the Praca do Comercio and all other important sights. It was a very clean and quiet hostel and for 20 Euros a night in a female 6 bed dorms and an included breakfast (toast, cheese, ham, cornflakes, tea, coffee and juice) I think absolutely reasonably priced. To be honest the staff wasn´t the greatest and friendliest, but I would still stay here again.
Our hostel in Estoril the Blue Boutique Hostel&Suites on the other hand had the absolute nicest staff I have ever met. The were so helpful and lovely and this was also one of the most beautiful hostels I have ever stayed in. It is beautifully furnished, a short 5 minute walk both from the closest train station (Sao Jao do Estoril) and the beach. We payed 16 Euros a night also including breakfast (bread rolls, cornflakes, juice, coffee and jam).
Während unser Zeit in Lissabon haben wir im Inn Possible Hostel geschlafen. Es liegt direkt an der Metro Station Rossio, in Laufentfernung zum Fluss, der Shoppingmeile, dem Praca do Comercio und allen anderen wichtigen Sehenswürdigkeiten. Das Hostel ist noch sehr neu, total sauber und ziemlich ruhig und wir haben pro Nacht im sechs Bett Frauenzimmer inklusive Frühstück (Toast, Schinken, Käse, Cornflakes, Kaffe und Saft) nur 20 Euro gezahlt. Die Angestellten dort waren nicht wirklich die freundlichsten, aber ansonsten kann ich mich über nichts beschweren.
Unsere Unterkunft in Estoril hingegen war ein wahrer Traum. Das Blue Boutique Hostel&Suites war nicht nur wunderschön, nur fünf Minuten vom Strand und der Zugstation Sao Jao do Estoril entfernt, sondern hatte auch unglaublich freundliche Mitarbeiter und war mit 16 Euro pro Nacht inklusive Frühstück (Brötchen, Marmelade, Cornflakes, Kaffee und Saft) auch wirklich günstig.
Sightseeing
Honestly all I can tell you is to just go explore. Every single corner is beyond gorgeous and in my three days I have not seen a single ugly house in Lisbon. Obviously there are some highlight you should not miss: Make sure you step by the Praca do Comercio and enjoy the gorgeous view down the riverbank. The three sorrounding buildings are absolutely beautiful and through the big gate you have direct access to the main shopping street. I also loved the climb up to the castle (even though I never managed to get up there as my sense of orientation is literally non-existent), but the tiny cobbled streets around here are beautiful. We also took the Elevador de Santa Justa up to the Chiado, a quarter which is a little more chic and higher class. If you climb up on more stair on the Elevador you get a wonderful view all over the town, so that is perfect for pictures. Another great viewpoint is the Miradouro da Graca. You can get up there with the iconic Tram 28, but to be honest to me it was never worth waiting in line for hours to get on it.
Um ganz ehrlich zu sein, braucht es in Lissabon kein straffes Programm, oder eine To Do-Liste. Die Stadt ist so wunderschön, dass man sich einfach treiben lassen und diese Schönheit genießen sollte. In meinen drei Tagen habe ich nicht ein einziges hässliches Haus gesehen! Ein paar Highlights, die man nicht verpassen sollte, gibt es natürlich trotzdem: Schaut unbedingt beim Praca do Comercio vorbei, einem von Lissabons beeindruckendsten Plätzen. Er liegt direkt am Fluss und bietet nicht nur eindrucksvolle umschließende Gebäude und eine fancy Reiterstatur, sondern auch direkten Zugang zur Shoppingmeile. Mich persönlich haben außerdem die wunderschönen, kleinen Kopfsteinstraßen rund um die Burg (dass ich es dank meines fehlenden Orientierungssinns nicht zur Burg geschafft habe, spielt also gar keine Rolle) und der wunderschöne Blick über die ganze Stadt vom Elevador de Santa Justa verzaubert. Der Elevador gewährt außerdem Zugang zum etwas höher liegenden (und höher bepreistem) Viertel Chiado. Einen schönen Blick über die Burg hat man vom Miradouro da Graca, zu dem auch die berühmte Tram 28 fährt. Mir persönlich war deren Vintage-Charme allerdings kein stundenlanges Anstehen wert.
Food
For all you seafoodlovers out there: welcome to heaven! There are countless restaurants offering freshly caught fish (especially on the beach at Estoril) for very low prices. In general Lisbon has been one of the cheapest places to eat out I have ever been to.
My absolute favourite Portuguese speciality was Pastel de Nata, a delicious little custard filled pastry that eat with powdered sugar and cinnamon. For just one Euro you will be in absolute heaven. The best one are supposedly sold in Belem so a short trip over there may be worth it. I also loved the Portuguese coffee, which finally contained enough caffeine even for me.
If you like Asian food our friends living in Lisbon found a wonderful Japanese restaurant called Dao offering an all you can eat deal (including Sushi) for 10 Euros only. If you get off at the Metro Station Martim Mortiz and you walk up the Rua de Palma you are in for a perfect hangover cure.
Für alle Menschen, die im Gegensatz zu mir Fisch und Meeresfrüchte lieben, ist Portugal sicherlich das Paradies. Es gab unzählige Restaurants, die fangfrischen Fisch für kleines Geld angeboten haben, vor allem direkt am Strand von Estoril. Allgemein war das Leben und Essen in Portugal unheimlich günstig und ich habe hier so wenig Geld ausgegeben, wie lange nicht mehr.
Meine allerliebste portugiesische Spezialität war Pastel de Nata, ein köstlicher kleiner Pudding gefüllter Kuchen, der mit Puderzucker und Zimt gegessen wird und nur einen Euro kostet! Die allerbesten Pastels gibt es angeblich in Belem, ein kleiner Abstecher dorthin mag es also alleine deshalb wert sein. Auch der portugiesische Kaffe hat mich als Kaffein-Junkie unglaublich glücklich gemacht, denn genau wie ich mag Portugal seinen Kaffe anscheinend stark.
Danke ortsansässiger Freunde haben wir außerdem ein wunderbares japanisches Restaurant gefunden, das für nur 10 Euro ein All you can Eat inklusive Sushi angeboten hat. Dao liegt in der Nähe der Metrostation Martim Mortiz, in der Rua de Palma und ist perfekt für ein Kateressen.
Nightlife
I LOVED going out in Lisbon. Every single night we went out was just beyond fun. In a weird coincidence we ended up running a bar for a night, we literally danced all night for three nights straight and we bought very cheap blinking headpieces for no particular reason. Most bars and clubs we went to where around Santos, but we also had a really fun night close to the Miradouro da Graca. While drinks are beyond cheap everywhere, the entry prices are a little higher than I am used to (8 to 12 Euros). To be safe I recommend you to take a taxi home, they really do not cost much and the streets can get a little shabby at night.
Unsere Girls Night Outs in Lissabon waren einfach wundervoll. Jedes mal hatten wir unglaublichen Spaß, haben auf mir bis jetzt immer noch unbekannte Art und Weise eine Bar übernommen und den Portugiesen Blümchen näher gebracht, drei komplette Nächte durchgetanzt und furchtbare leuchtende Haarreifen gekauft. Die meisten Bars und Clubs, die wir besucht haben, liegen in Santos, aber wir hatten auch einen sehr spaßigen Abend in der Nähe des Miradouro da Graca. Während Drinks unheimlich günstig waren, sind die Eintrittspreise in Clubs etwas höher als ich es gewohnt bin und liegen zwischen 8 und 12 Euro. Besonders Frauen empfehle ich bei der Heimfahrt in ein Taxi zu investieren und auf Nummer sicher zu gehen, ganz ungefährlich sind die Straßen Lissabons in der Nacht nämlich nicht.

AntwortenLöschenNext time, you should visit the algarve (south of Portugal) this is where I'm from and it's sooo beautiful you wouldn't believe. It has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world and the nightlife here is just insane... :)
