After spending five wonderful months in the darling little town on the English coast I am more than head over heels for Brighton. I have been home for almost two months now and I still miss it (but not the seagulls) every single day. While I was an absolute London Girl for the past five years, I now have another happy place in my beloved England and hope each and every one of you takes a short trip over the canal to enjoy this gorgeous gem, or at least reserve a day for Brighton when in London. If you are ready for a trip down to the coast, here are my 10 absolute Must Dos in Brighton:

Fünf wundervolle Monate konnte ich dank Erasmus in der englischen Küstenstadt Brighton verbringen. Als absolutes London Girl mit einer riesigen Liebe für die britische Hauptstadt hätte ich nie erwartet, dass dieses kleine Städtchen mich so verzaubern würde. Aber in meinen fünf Monaten in Brighton hat es mich genau zwei Mal in das nur eine Stunde entfernte London verschlagen und gelangweilt habe ich mich trotzdem keinen Tag lang. Ich habe mich wirklich in Brighton verliebt und würde jedem raten entweder einen Tag für den Strandort einzuplanen, wenn eh gerade in London geurlaubt wird, oder tatsächlich einen kompletten Trip einzulegen. Wer noch nicht ganz überzeugt ist, oder wer schon mal ein wenig Inspiration sammeln will, findet hier meine Top 10 Brighton Tipps:

1. Enjoy Brunch at Bill´s

This beautiful restaurant in the heart of the Laines had it´s first ever branch in the little village Lewes just outside Brighton, but now has spread all over England. This is probably not only thanks to the delicious brunch made from local ingredients, but if you ask me that has to be a huge part of it. While there is obviously the old English Fry Up, you can also opt for the amazing buttermilk pancakes if you prefer your breakfast a little less meaty. Bill´s is also a great option for lunches and dinner, as not only the food is amazing, it also has the most attractive waiters in all of Brighton

Das liebevoll eingerichtete Restaurant direkt in der North Road hat seinen allerersten Sitz in dem kleinen Dörfchen Lewes neben Brighton. Mittlerweile gibt es Ableger überall in England, sicherlich nicht zuletzt wegen dem köstlichen Frühstück aus lokalen und nachhaltigen Zutaten. Der Klassiker inklusive Baked Beans, Bacon und Toast ist quasi ein Muss beim England-Urlaub, wer es beim Frühstück allerdings etwas leichter und weniger fleischlastig mag, wird die Buttermilch Pancakes lieben. Auch zum Lunch oder Dinner lohnt sich ein Besuch im Bill´s, nicht nur das Essen ist köstlich und das Ambiente toll, hier arbeiten auch die mit Abstand schönsten Kellner in ganz Brighton.

2. Go on a treasure hunt at Snooper´s Paradise

This vintage store in the Laines is an absolute dream for any second hand lover. You can literally find anything and everything from antique jewelry and books, to mirrors, crockery and sunglasses. If you plan a visit make sure you take enough time, with all the little corners and nooks a visit here can take hours. My favourite place is Snooper´s Attic, the little boutique on the first floor, where designers from Brighton offer fashion made from vintage fabric, magical headpieces and dainty accessories in a lovingly decorated room stuffed with fairy lights, books and dream catchers. Don´t forget to snap some memories in the little photo booth!

Dieser Secondhand Laden in den Lanies ist ein wahres Paradies für Vintage-Fans. Von uraltem Schmuck über Schallplatten und Büchern bis hin zu Spiegeln, Geschirr und Sonnenbrillen gibt es hier die tollsten Kuriositäten. Für den verwinkelten Laden sollte man sich einiges an Zeit nehmen, denn man findet dort hinter jede Ecke etwas neues und skurriles  Ganz besonders liebe ich Snooper´s Attic, die wunderschönen Boutique im oberen Stockwerk in dem Designer und Designerinnen aus Brighton Mode aus Vintagestoffen, Kopfschmuck und feingliedrige Accescoires in einem Dachgeschoss voller Lichterketten, Büchern und Traumfängern verkaufen. Nicht vergessen dem Fotoautomaten einen Besuch abzustatten, so hat man auch gleich ein Souvenir.

3. Watch the sun set at the Pier

This entertainment centre right at the beach used to be home to restaurants and ball rooms. Nowadays it still features food (though of lesser quality), an amusement hall and a little amusement park right above the sea. While the Pier may be a little trashy, it belongs to Brighton like no other and has a truly special flair to it. Treat yourself to an ice cream with a flake or sit down with a bottle of Cider or Wine and enjoy the sunset from the beach, while overlooking the Pier.

Das Vergnügungszentrum direkt am Meer war früher das Zuhause von Restaurants und Tanzlokalen und beherbergt heute einen kleinen Jahrmarkt, eine Spielhölle und zahlreiche kleine Stände für Essen. Obwohl der Pier ein wenig trashig anmuten lasst, gehört er einfach zu dieser Stadt und hat einen ganz eigenen Flair. Am besten gönnt man sich ein Softeis mit Flake, einem Schokoriegel, oder kauft sich in einem der Convenience Stores eine Flasche Wein oder Cider und genießt dann den Sonnenuntergang mit Blick auf Strand und Pier.

4. Feed the squirrels at the Royal Pavillon Park

Brighton´s most famous landmark is definitely not an insider tipp, but if something is this gorgeous this should not keep you from going. The decadent holiday house of Prince George IV did not have too many fans at his time, as it was mostly tax payer´s money that went into restructuring the former little farm house into the impressive Indian and Chinese inspired palace it is today, but it is well loved today. Booking an actual tour through the impressive rooms is definitely worth it for anyone who loves pomp as much as I do, but just admiring the building from the park around it is a nice way to spend an afternoon. You may be joined by some suqirrels so make sure to bring some nuts, as they are as adorable as hungry and may eat straight out of your hand. Having afternoon tea at the Pavillon for a royal touch is also highly recommended by scone and clotted cream experts like me and my exchange friends.

Brighton´s berühmtes Wahrzeichen ist sicher kein Geheimtipp, aber wenn etwas so wunderschön ist, ist das auch nicht überraschend. Der dekadente Pavillon von Prinz George IV hatte zu seiner Zeit wenig Freunde, schließlich war es vor allem das Geld der britischen Steuerzahler, dass in indisch und chinesisch angehauchte Dekorationen, riesige Kronleuchter und feine Seidentapeten investiert wurde, ist heute dafür aber umso beliebter. Eine Führung durch das beeindruckende Innere lohnt sich auf jeden Fall, wer allerdings nicht zu sehr auf Protz und Prunk steht, bekommt in dem anschließenden Park für kleineres Geld Entertainment geboten. Die Eichhörnchen dort sind nicht nur furchtbar niedlich, sie sind auch so zahm, dass man sie mit mitgebrachten Nüssen aus der Hand füttern kann. Den Afternoon Tea im Royal Pavillon zu genießen, bietet nicht nur ein wenig royales Feeling, sondern wird auch wärmstens von so renommierten Clotted Cream Expertinnen, wie mir und meinen Austausch-Mädels empfohlen.

5. Make your day 10 times better with Brownies from Cloud 9

Brighton is filled to the brim with adorable cafés, bakeries and cupcake shops, but there is none like Cloud 9. And if Cloud 9 is the church of the Chocoholics, their Brownies would be the Holy Grail. They are absolutely chocolatey and moist and basically melt in your mouth. They are so good that they could fix a broken heart in seconds and probably are the solution for world peace. Next to Brownies they also offer beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes and amazing hot chocolates and milkshakes.

Brighton strotzt nur so vor süßen Cafés, Bäckereien und Cupcake Läden, doch Cloud 9 trägt ungefragt die Krone. Und sollte Cloud 9 die Kirche der Chocoholics sein, so sind die Brownies dort definitiv der heilige Gral. Die Brownies hier sind so unglaublich schokoladig und saftig, dass sie beinahe im Mund schmelzen und können wahrscheinlich sogar ein gebrochenes Herz in Sekundenbruchteilen zusammen kleben. Außer Brownies gibt es hier wundervoll dekorierte Kuchen und Cupcakes und köstliche heiße Schokoladen und Milchshakes.

6. Feel at least British at heart with Cream Tea at the Tea Cosy

Visiting England without having Afternoon Tea, would be almost as condemnable as not bowing to the Queen. I absolutely love Cream Tea, including scones, clotted cream, jam and a cup of tea and believe having cakes before dinner is an absolute amazing idea. In Brighton the Tea Cosy, a tiny tea shop, filled to the brim with pictures of the Royal Family, Union Jacks and all things British, is where the beast tea is at.

Der Afternoon Tea gehört zu England, wie die Queen in den Buckingham Palace. Ich liebe ganz besonders Cream Tea, ein absolut köstlicher Nachmittagsnack, der Scones, Clotted Cream, Marmelade und eine Tasse Tee beinhaltet. Besonders gut ist er in Brighton im Tea Cosy, einem winzigen Teeladen bis zum Rand vollgestopft mit Bildern der Königsfamilie, Teewärmern und der Union Jack.

7. Dance the Night away at The Haunt

Despite being very active int the nightlife of Brighton, I never found anything that could match The Haunt. A nice little club, which always felt alright space wise even if it was packed and was quite cheap compared to other possibilities in town, especially when you put your name on the Facebook guest list and show up before 12 (often only 1 pound!). If you love 90s music as much as I do you will love the Saturdays here, an amazing mixture of Girly Pop and 2000s trash is offered on Thursday at the Secret Discotheque.

Trotz verschiedenen Abstechern in andere Clubs ist The Haunt mein absoluter Liebling in Brighton gewesen. Eine nette, kleine Location, die nicht zu eng wird und im Vergleich zu vielen anderen Clubs sehr billig ist. Wer wie ich auf 90er steht, wird hier vor allem am Samstag glücklich, ein bunte Mischung aus Girly Pop und alten Hits gibt es jeden Donnerstag bei der Secret Discotheque-Reihe. Unbedingt bei den Events auf die Gästeliste schreiben und vor zwölf da sein, dann kostet der Eintritt oft nur ein Pfund.

8. Attend one of the Festivals in May and June

Brighton´s cultural life is simply buzzing and there are countless plays, musicals and concerts throughout the entire year. However May and June with the Fringe and the Brighton Festival are busiest, offering extremely cheap or free tickets to all sorts of events. Another highlight is the Brighton and Hove Food and Drink Festival, where food from all over the world is offered right at the seafront for a weekend during these months.

Brighton sprüht nur so vor Leben und das ganze Jahr über gibt es zahllose Theaterstücke, Musicals und Konzerte. Ganz besonders spannend wird es allerdings im Mai und Juni, wenn das Fringe und das Brighton Festival statt finden und der Veranstaltungskalender nur so aus den Nähten platzt. Auch das jährlich statt findende Food and Drink Festival für Hove und Brighton ist definitiv einen Abstecher wert. Direkt am Meer wird dort ein Wochenende lang Essen aus aller Welt angeboten.



9. Take a stroll at the Open Market

I have talked about this market before and I still absolutely love it. You will not only find cheap vegetables from the region, but also pretty little cafés, Indian and Mediterranean specialities and loads of superfoods and nuts. Coming here is especially handy for those, who want to have a home cooked meal once in a while, but the nice and quirky sales men here, make a visit here special for almost everyone. On Sundays there is also a flea market taking place here. 

Dieser etwas außerhalb liegende Markt bietet nicht nur günstiges Gemüse aus der Gegend, sondern auch viele nette Cafés, indische und mediterrane Spezialitäten und zahlreiche Superfoods und Nüsse. Besonders für alle, die auch einmal einen Abend selber kochen, lohnt sich ein Einkauf hier und die netten, verschrobenen Verkäufer machen einen Besuch auf für andere ganz besonders. Am Sonntag gibt es hier außerdem einen Flohmarkt mit Büchern, Möbeln und Kleidung.

10. Find a new definition for All you can Eat

If All you can Eat makes you think of cheap, ready made food, you should open up your mind and give it another shot. The food scene in Brighton is simply incredible and rumor have it there are some of the best restaurants in all of England in this little sea town. Especially if you are on a budget, the great All you can Eat-Restaurants here can save you. If you are a little healthnut head over to Foodilic, where you can get organic and vegan salads, quiches and the best mashed potatoes ever for 7 pounds only. Bombay Aloo and Bombay  Lounge offer absolutely amazing Indian food. While the Bombay Aloo only offers vegan and vegetarian dishes for 5 pounds, the Bombay Lounge also offers meat for two pounds more. No matter which restaurant you choose the food is absolutely delicious and you may have to consider reinvesting your saved money into a taxi, as you could be too stuffed to walk home. All three restaurants are located along the North Street, the big main street and can thus easily be part of a shopping trip.

Wer bei All you can Eat an billiges, unliebevoll zubereitetes Essen denkt, der sollte sich das Ganze in Brighton noch einmal genauer ansehen. Brightons Restaurantszene ist einfach unglaublich und angeblich gibt es hier einige der besten Restaurants in ganz England. Vor allem für Reisende mit kleinem Budget lohnt sich ein Besuch in einem der vielen All you can Eat-Restaurants. Besonders gesund geht es bei Foodilic zu hier, hier gibt es biologische und vegane Salate, Quiches und den besten Kartoffelbrei, den ich je gegessen habe für 7 Pfund. Indisch für kleines Geld gibt es im Bombay Aloo und in der Bombay Lounge. Im Bombay Aloo bleibt es für 5 Pfund vegetarisch, in der Bombay Lounge gibt es für 7 Pfund auch Fleischgerichte, alles ist wirklich einfach nur köstlich. Alle drei Restaurants befinden sich entlang der North Street, der großen Hauptstraße und können so leicht in einen Shoppingbummel einbezogen werden.
